Europe
“Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.” George Washington Carver.
EUROPE
Europe is generally respected for its educational systems. However, over six years of economic and financial crisis has resulted in considerable strain on the public budgets of the EU countries. Paths of reform across government spending saw drastic cuts across various sectors, with the education sector being hit particularly hard in certain countries. The consequences of the cuts in education budgets include a reduced quality in teaching and a lack of access to advanced education by individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. All countries should realize the long-term transformative power of education and distribute resources in a more responsible way.
CROATIA
Many hoped that joining the European Union would trigger an economic revival, Croatia joined the EU in 2013, but the country is still stuck in recession. To make a success of its EU membership, this small country needs outside help. Frustration is widespread in the field of education, where the situation for primary and secondary school teachers has deteriorated in all areas. It was reported that through numerous cuts, teachers have seen reductions in their monthly salaries. Uncertainty, fear and concern best describe the situation in the field of education. IFED worked with the Varazdin Public Library to add reading and educational resources for primary students.
