The Caribbean and Island Nations have been hard hit by both climate change and the pandemic, and in some instances terrorism and gang warfare. The economies are heavily reliant on tourism and meaningful employment requires English language proficiency.

CUBA

The Cuban government provides uniforms for school age children and attendance is mandatory throughout the country. The challenge we found in the rural villages is limited financial resources to allow parents and educators to purchase supplies and educational tools. We delivered white boards, dry erase markers, teaching resources and supplies to St. Vincent community near Cienfiegos, much to the delight of the teachers and parents in the community.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Centro Educativo Shalom is a barrio school that survives on generous donations of school supplies and project support from tourists. Local families earning under $200 monthly send their children to this private school for a token tuition. There are currently 200 students enolled. Magdelena started the school with the vision and goal of providing a quality education to those who are willing, and want the opportunity to better themselves through education.

Haiti

We traveled to the mountainous village of Trouin, Haiti with Haitian Hope. After delivering two huge cases of generic supplies, the leadership requested we purchase textbooks in French, (the language of the graduate exams) for the 12 classrooms. We also purchased textbooks for all core subjects in each grade at the bookstore sponsored by the organization. These books were never delivered…
